2010 IHF Women's Junior Championships - July 17 - 31 2010, Korea
Australia 14 ( 5 ) vs Hungary 51 (24) July 19, 2010.

Jul 20, 2010

Today's game saw the Australian junior women's team up against the tournament’s favourites, Hungary and it was obvious throughout the game why they were so highly rated. Hungary scored in the first minute and Vanja Smiljanic scored first for Australia two minutes later. The score was relatively even for a time as Sonja Miskovic worked hard in goals and then Hungary started to pull away. Any mistake on Australia's behalf was quickly seized upon and passes were intercepted time and again. Hungary was strong, aggressive and physical players who continually came out and tousled with the Australian women.

The first half saw Australia finish with 5 (3 to Vanja Smiljanic and 2 to Victoria Brunsberg) to Hungary's 24 and several yellow cards were handed out as the girls fought a tough battle.

In the second half, Hungary continued with their strong plays and Taylee Lewis made a magnificent double save when the ball ricochet towards the goal after hitting the post. Nina Markovic had a great pick up and shot at goal resulting in a penalty which was perfectly executed by Victoria. Lauren Keith scored 2 goals in the second half, Vanja scored a further goal and Victoria added 5 goals and the penalty to the team score. The final result was 14 hard fought goals to Australia versus 51 goals to Hungary.

Sonja Miskovic was the Team's Most Valuable Player for the match.

After the game, the press commented on Australia only having ten players while other teams have up to sixteen players, but it was also noted that the Australian's must be enjoying the game as they just keep on smiling!

Coach, Janne Lilleeng, was pleased with the performance against the favourites Hungary saying "the girls did well and I didn't expect them to score as many goals against this strong team".
