Both the tournament dinner on Friday at Kirra Sports Club and the informal gathering on Saturday at the Kirra Beach Hotel were well attended and enjoyed by all, with a rowdy rendition of a Divinyls song by two Queensland Men’s players being a highlight.

Both finals were refereed by the IHF officials, George and Sinisa.

The Men’s final typified the intensity of the weekend with the game going to a shoot out to determine the winner, Monash Blue took out the first set 16:5 and Monash Grey responding in the second set 13:9.

The shootout lasted 6 shots each before Monash Grey emerged victorious 4:3 after a miss on the first golden goal shot by Monash Blue.

The Women’s final was a replay of the final pool game for each team. In the pool round UTS 2 was victorious 2:1 over South Coast. However in the final South Coast got their revenge for the loss taking out the match 2:0 with wins of 8:3 and 11:5 in the two sets respectively. Emma van Bussel being the standout with 10 goals in the game for South Coast.

Both George and Sinisa were extremely impressed with the level of handball played and believe Australia has an excellent opportunity to progress in Beach Handball. Both were expecting high competition from the Australian Men’s team but were extremely impressed with the general level of play in the Women’s competition.

The tournament received some media coverage with Foxsports attending to film a general information piece which was shown on the Foxsports news loop on Friday 4/2/11. Footage of the report is available via the Foxsports website of the Australian Handball Federation.
