National Men's Junior Program

Congratulations to the Australian Men’s Youth Team

August 27, 2007

The Australian Handball Federation congratulates the Australian Men’s Youth Team in its participation in the recent Youth Handball World Championship held in Bahrain

The Youth Team was up against great odds but gave it their best shot.  The selection of the Youth Team was finalised following the Junior National Championships held in Sydney in June 2007.  As such they only had two weeks playing as a team before they  went to the World Championships, as well as needing to raise funds to enable them to participate.

Head Coach Dragan Marinkovic did very well in getting the players from various States to perform as a cohesive team. The comments from the players regarding their World Championship experience reflected a very positive outlook despite enduring losses in the tournament.  They regard the experience valuable in their development for participation in similar significant handball events.  Rather than being disheartened, they are motivated to train harder and improve further their skills.  Taking into account that they were up against teams which had played together a lot longer and previously participated in a number of international tournaments, the Australian Men’s Youth Team did well.

The players unanimously regarded good teamwork as what helped them through the rigours of each match.  They also agreed that teamwork enabled the level of play by each one of them and were happy to acknowledge the following top scorers:

Interview with Dragan Marinkovic National Men's Junior Program Head Coach

June 24, 2007
Dragan Marinkovic

A professional Handball player from 1983 to 1997 in former Yugoslavia, Macedonia and Italy as well as a former Yugoslavian Junior National Captain, are amongst the many achievements of Dragan Marinkovic's illustrious Handball career, before immigrating to Australia, with his family, in 1998.

Since 1998, Dragan has been heavily involved in coaching Handball from Club and State levels in Victoria, to Australian National Men's Head Coach ( 2001 - 2003 ), coaching Australia to its solitary World Championship victory, in Portugal 2003, against Greenland.

Earlier this year, Dragan was appointed Head Coach of the Junior Men's Program and is now preparing a National Youth team ( 18 years and under ) to compete at the International Handball Federation World Youth Championships in Bahrain, July 26 to August 03, 2007.

Dragan was kind enough to answer some questions about the recent Junior Nationals in Sydney and the upcoming World Youth Championships in Bahrain.

- AHF Webmaster

2007 Junior Nationals Tournament

Q. As Head Coach of the Junior Men's Program, what were your thoughts on the standard of play of the Junior Men's during the tournament?

A. Considering the participation levels of this sport in Australia, I think the players produced a high standard and I was very happy with what I saw at the tournament.

Q. Did any one player stand out during the tournament for you? And if so why?

A. There were a few players that stood out to me during the Junior Nationals, especially Bevan Calvert of New South Wales Under 21 team. It was a nice to watch him play because he has a lot of talent, potential and Handball knowledge.

Q. What would you like to see in future Junior tournaments to improve the tournament?

A. First of all I would like to see more participation from the other States, and also I hope that every Junior State Coach tries to improve the quality of handball, and to try and involve more kids in the sport.

Q. Any other comments you would like to add about the Junior Nationals?

A. The organisation of the tournament was great, thanks to all the Officials from New South Wales and the Australian Handball Federation that helped make this tournament a good one, and it will be good for the next Nationals to organise another scratch match between the Veterans and another team, so all the kids, and spectators can watch and enjoy the beauty of Handball.

2007 World Youth Championships

Q. Australia was a late inclusion into the tournament, with limited time to prepare the team what will be your major focus during your preparations?

A. Because of the very short notice I will be working on tactics during the camps and also individual corrections with each player to try and merge all individual qualities in one team.

Q. What does this tournament mean for the development of Handball in Australia?

A. It means a lot because the kids will have the opportunity to compete at International level against Handball players their own age, they will see the different levels of Handball in different countries, and if we take into account, that all our players are 18 years or younger, this means with experience, and more work in the future,  this same team, in two years time, could also represent Australia at the Junior World Championships ( Under 21 ). It will also be good if the boys participating in the Youth World Cup, share their gains and experience with other players in their State to motivate others to work harder.

Q. Australia is drawn in Group D with Sweden, Korea and Egypt. What do you know about these Youth National Teams?

A. My knowledge of these Youth National Teams is limited, except that Egypt was the Youth World Champions a few years ago. I know a lot about the level of Handball played by the Senior National teams of Egypt, Korea and Sweden, and if their Juniors follow in their footsteps, it will be very tough group.

Q. What would you like to see the Australian players gain from the experience of this tournament for their Handball playing careers?

A. I would like them to gain Handball knowledge, friendship, skills, enthusiasm and if any of the boys receive any offers to play and learn Handball overseas that will also be great.

Australia to compete in Bahrain

June 22, 2007
Due to the withdrawal of the New Zealand National Youth Team from the Men's World Youth Championships, the Australian Handball Federation [ AHF ] requested,  and was granted, entry for Australia to participate in the tournament, in place of New Zealand. Australia will compete in Group D against Egypt, Sweden and Korea. The tournament starts on July 26, 2007 in Bahrain and concludes on August 03, 2007.

As a result of this decision and with the tyranny of distance and limited resources, the International Handball Federation [ IHF ] was understanding of  Australia's request to be relinquished of its place in this year's Men's Junior World Championships, to be held in FYR Macedonia in August.
