Today is the Aussies’ its Placement match which is their
last game in this championship. This was against
Argentina which held 19th place in 2009; 20th
for 2005 and 2007 in the IHF world championship. It
came 3rd in the 2007 Pan American Games.
The Aussies went on court feeling positive that they
would meet the goals they set for the match. Team
Captain Cathy Kent was in goal all set for another
challenging match. Both sides fired up from the start.
The successive attempts at goal by Allira Hudson-Gofers,
Victoria Fletcher, Mary Kelly and Daniela Cook were
unfortunately unsuccessful. It was not until 3 minutes
into the game that the Argentineans that were first to
score a goal.

Four minutes later, Daniela Cook scored for the Aussies
from centre at 6 metres, score then being 1:2. This
was followed by a goal by Madeleine McCafee about three
minutes later to take the Aussies score to 2:3. The
Argentineans continued to score more but there were
blocks of three and four minutes in-between them which
reflect the strong defense put on by the Aussies whose
numerous shot at goals were not good. The Aussies even
had a steal and fastbreaks but were not able to finish
it off.
It was 20.12 game time when Allira Hudson-Gofers scored
from centre at 9 metres, the score then being 3:9. A
breakthrough by Rosa Boyd four minutes later added to
the Aussies’ score then being
4:11.
Jemima Harbort went in goal for Cathy Kent. Rosa’s goal
was to be the Aussies last one in the first half as
their successive attempts were not successful. Equally
it took the Argentineans five minutes to score also what
was the last goal in this half. Victoria Fletcher’s go
at direct free throw at close of the first half did not
find its mark.

Allira Hudson-Gofers’ persistence paid off when she
scored her third successive goal at 37.38 game time,
with the score at
7:16. The Aussies kept up the spirited play but were not able
to convert their attempts at goal in the meantime that
the Argentineans found their form and continued to widen

It was approximately another ten minutes from last

time the Aussies scored especially when Kim Tennant [who
is also one of the team’s Physiotherapist] scored from a
fastbreak from an assist from Clare Murray. This brought
the Aussies’ score to 9:24, with six minutes left of the
match.
The Aussies kept putting a good fight to the end

Madeleine’s comments “ The training camp before the
world championship had a shaky start with the players
not able to arrive all at the same time. Once everyone
was there, we were able to create the flow in the team
and create some moves. The warm up games with the local
clubs were beneficial to get the team together to be on
the same page.
This is my second world championship involvement and
I have learned so much from being involved in such a
high level competition. The two teams I have been
involved are different. I felt good being on the
starting line but found that nerve racking at times.
The first two games a bit of time to warm up and find
our playing style together. I felt at the game vs
Russia we got it together. I definitely look forward to
training and build on my world championship experience.” |
